About Bhind District (Madhya Pradesh)
Bhind district is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Bhind city. The district is named after the great mythological Hindu saint, Vibhandak Rishi, popularly known as Bhindi Rishi. This place, during the Vedic era was under the control of Yadu, the son of King Yavati. The native of the district believe that the area was ruled by Shishupal, from the Chedi King during Mahabharata period. After some time the king of Yadav clan, Krishna came to this region and ruled over it. At the time of Mahajanapada, the place was under the domination of Chandels. Later, Chandels were defeated in the hands of royal Rajput Rajawat and the Chauhan Dynasty ruled the area. After India got its independence in 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India was formally inaugurated the State of Madhya Bharat on 28th May, 1948 at Gwalior. Then, the leaders were gathered at a place and made a decision to divide the Union into six districts which include the present district of Bhind too. Finally, on 1st November, 1956 the state of Madhya Bharat was merged to Madhya Pradesh due to reorganisation.
Geographically, the district lies at 26°56'N latitude, 78°79'E longitude and 142 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 5.08% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,459 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 40th in the state and 268th in India. It is bounded by Agra, Etawah, Jalaun and Jhansi districts of Uttar Pradesh on the north and the east, Datia district on the south, Gwalior district on the southwest and Morena district on the west. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1038.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 7 tehsils namely Bhind, Ater, Mehgaon, Gohad, Mihona, Lahar and Raun. There are 1 Lok Sabha and 8 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 8 sub-districts, 12 towns and 937 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 17,03,005 out of which 9,26,843 are males and 7,76,162 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 837 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 19.21% including 18.69% were males and 19.84% were females. The population density in the district is 382 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 34,989 out of which 19,244 were males and 15,745 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 11,975 out of which 8,100 were males and 3,875 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 93.68% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 99.66%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the population in the district are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The farmers of the district also earn a good amount of income from the dairy and other dairy products. The fertile soil in the district is favourable for the production of agricultural items. The nearby canals are the principal source of irrigation in the district. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice and different types of pulses. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised but some industries of animal husbandry, poultry farming, etc are found in it. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 14,32,804 lakhs at current price and Rs. 8,44,097 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 13,22,817 lakh at current price and Rs. 7,59,367 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 68,051 at current price and Rs. 39,065 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised government educational institutions are Govt College, Govt Gandhi College, Govt Girls College, Govt College, Govt College, Govt Degree College, Govt Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia PG College, Govt Maharshi Arvind College, Govt College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 75.26% out of which 85.4% are males and 63.14% are females.
Dr. Ramlakhan Singh, an eminent Indian politician and a member of 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Lok Sabha from the Bhind constituency was born on 20th December, 1950 at Bhind city. He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party.
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Chhatri of Malhar Rao Holkar, located at Alampur in the district was built by Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar in 1766 A.D. It has many marvellous carvings and construct on the pattern of the chhatris of Holkar rulers at Indore. Shri Rawatpura Dham is the temple of Lord Hanuman, situated at Lahar in the Bhind district. The Fort of Ater, situated at a distance of 35 km. from Bhind was built by the Bhadauria kings namely Badan Singh, Maha Singh and Bakhat Singh in the period between 1664 to 1668. Some other places of interest in the district are Jain temples, Mata Renuka temple, Narad Dev temple, National Chambal (Gharial) Wildlife Sanctuary, Gohad fort, Sun temple, Dandraua temple, Malanpur, etc.
