About Bijnor District (Uttar Pradesh)

Bijnor, a unique place among the districts of the Western Uttar Pradesh is lying at the foot of the Himalayas. The district of Bijnor was closely associated to the great epic of Mahabharata, and it is also believed that Vidur and Kuti was lived here during the Vedic period. At the time of Akbar’s reign, Bijnor was a significant part of his Mughal Empire. In the early 18th century, the Rohilla Pashtuns set up their independence in this area and called them by the name, Rohilkhand. Around the year 1748, the Rohilla chief named Ali Mohammed Khan annexed the place of Bijnor, then the rest of which very soon went into the hands of Rohillas. After sometime Marathas captured Bijnor who were also instigated by enemies of Rohillas, leading to several battles. In 1772 the Nawab of Oudh made a treaty with the Rohillas but the Rohilla chieftains cheated the Nawab. In 1774 the Nawab concluded a treaty of alliance with the East India Company government of Calcutta. In accordance with the terms mentioned in the treaty the East India Company had supplied a brigade to assist him in enforcing his claims against the Rohillas. That led to the Rohilla War, the Rohillas were driven beyond the Ganges, and Bijnor was incorporated in the territories of the Nawab of Oudh, who in 1774 ceded it to the British East India Company. The British authority was there in the place until India got its independence and Bijnor as a separate district came into existence in November 1988.

Sahu Ramesh Chandra Jain, a famous media person, philanthropist, promoter of Indian literature and leader of the worldwide Jain community was born on 15th August, 1925 at Najibabad of the Bijnor District. During his life time he was honoured by two great awards-Honorary D. Lit by the Bundelkhand University and Jhansi Honour of Vidya Vachaspati by Gurukul Kangri University.

Geographically, the district lies between 29°37'N latitude, 78°14'E longitude and 223 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 8.75% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 4,561 sq. km. and in terms geographical area it occupies the ranks of 12th in the state and 246th in India. It is surrounded by Pauri Garhwal and Hardwar in the North, Moradabad in the South, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar in East and Saharanpur, Muzaffar Nagar and Meerut in the West. The prominent rivers that passes through the district are Ganga and Ramganga. The climate of the district remains pleasant during the monsoon season. But during the summer its climate remains extremely hot and humid. The district summer highest day temperature is in between 25°C to 44°C.  Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1362.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 5 sub-divisions namely Sardar, Chandpur, Dhampur, Nagina and Najibabad. On the other hand in order to administer in a better way the 5 sub-divisions district is divided into 11 developmental blocks. There are 8 Assembly constituencies in the district likewise, Najibabad, Chandpur, Noorpur, Dhampur, Nagina, Bijnor, Barhapur and Nehtaur. Moreover, the district comprises 26 towns and 2,984 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 36,82,713 including 19,21,215 are males and 17,61,498 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 917 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth of the district was 17.60% out of which 16.30% were males and 19.04% were females. The population density in the district is 807 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,15,695 including 60,839 were males and 54,856 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 18,552 out of which 10,335 were males and 8,217 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions of the district are Hindu and Muslim with 55.18% and 43.04% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Urdu with 76.33% and 22.53%.

The economy of the district is mainly based on agriculture. The chief crop of the agriculture of the district is sugarcane. There is also a Rural BPO in Bijnor which named Sookshm Information Services Pvt Ltd (SIS). It is founded by a team of professionals who had worked for various MNCs (mostly BPO companies) and the Government agencies. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 32,67,388 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 21,21,382 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 28,99,181 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 18,32,355 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 69,694 at Current Price and Rs. 44,049 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district has some well-known engineering institutions-North India Institute of Technology, Veera College of Engineering, Govt. I.T.I, Govt. Polytechnic College and R.V. Institute of Technology. The educational institutions running by the Educational group named Lakshya Education Singapore is also good. As per 2011 census the literacy rate of the district is 68.48% out of which 76.56% are males and 59.72% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 21,35,393 including 12,41,471 are males and 8,93,922 are females.

Raashid Alvi, an eminent name among the politicians of India was born on 15th April, 1956 at Chandpur, Bijnor. Earlier, he was a member of Bahujan Samaj Party but later he joined the Indian National Congress. He served as a member of the Indian Parliament from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

During the year 2021, there were 88,300 domestic tourists and 8 foreign tourists who visited these places of the district. The centres of attraction of the district which allures the travellers from far distance place. Mandawar Ka Mahal, a magnificent historical monument in Mandawar was constructed by Queen Victoria in 1850. Najibaudaulah’s Fort in Najibabad was built by Najibudaulah aka Gulam Kadir. This age old fort stands even today. ‘Sena ka Dawar’ (Army’s gate) in the village Saindwar of the district has a mythological touch. There is a temple of Dronacharya, the tutor of the Pandavas. The Sita’s Temple on the Chandpur-Jalilpur Road about one kilometer from Nanore village is also a place of interest for travellers. It does not have any statue and is called popularly called as ‘Sita Mandir Math’. Jahanabad is located on the bank of the river Ganges about one kilometer from Ganj. During the Mughal era, this village was a ‘riyasat (princely state) with 101 villages. Some other prime temples and mosques in bijnor are Shiv Mandir, Chamunda Devi Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Radha Krishna Mandir, Jama Majid, Markaz Majid, Teli Wali Majid, Bahar Wali Majid and Peer Baba.
