About Jyotiba Phule Nagar / Amroha District (Uttar Pradesh)
Earlier, Amroha district was popularly known as Jyotiba Phule Nagar district. Amroha district is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Amroha town. The name of the district, Amroha is taken from the two Sanskrit words, one is Amr meaning Mango and another is Vanam meaning forest. According to the author, Tarikh-i-Amroha, the place was under the rule of Bhardwaj Tagas between 676 and 1141 AD. After sometime in 589 AH/1093 AD the region was captured by Mahmud of Ghazni. Then came the reign of Alauddin Khalji, when Malik Tughluq and Malik marched through the city in order to participate in the battle against the Mongols at the Battle of Amroha. Every ruler who ruled this place for a particular period of time had constructed some marvelous monuments here. During the reign of Shah Jahan, Siyadat Maab Saiyid Abdul Maajid had built this fort with strong walls under the supervision of Kamal Khan Khanazad in 1652 AD. Other notable monuments from that period include mosques, Idgahs, khanqah, dargahs, Imambaras, Diwan khana, madrasas and mandirs. In the today’s Amroha, Viqar-ul-mulk gate was constructed in the memory of Nawab Viqar ul mulk. At that time, the territory of current Amroha district was ruled by the Sambhal Sarkar of Delhi and it was the subah under the Mughal Empire. After sometime it was incorporated as the part of Awadh. In the year 1801, the administration of this region was surrendered by the Nawab of Awadh to the British East India Company. Amroha district was emerged as a separate district when it was carved out from the erstwhile Moradabad district on 24th April, 1997. In the year 2012, the name of the district was changed from Jyotiba Phule Nagar district to Amroha district.
Syed Amir Haider Kamal Naqvi popularly known as Kamal Amrohi was born on 17th January, 1918 at Amroha town. He was an eminent Indian film director, screenwriter, and dialogue writer. He was honoured by the prestigious Filmfare Best Dialogue Award in 1961 for his contribution in the dialogues of the famous Hindi film Mughal-E-Azam.
Geographically, the district lies at 28°90’N latitude, 78°47’E longitude and 207 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 3.82% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,249 sq. km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 57th in the state and 473rd in India. It is bounded by Bijnor district on the north, Moradabad district on the east and southeast, Badaun district on the south and Ganga River on the west. The prominent river that flows through the district is Ganga. Natives of the district experience extreme hot during the summer and fairly cold during the winter. The actual rainfall in the district was 735 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Amroha, Dhanaura and Hasanpur. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 3 sub-districts, 9 towns and 1,123 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 18,40,221 including 9,63,449 are males and 8,76,772 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 910 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 22.76% out of which 21.15% were males and 24.57% were females. The population density in the district is 818 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 45,717 including 25,064 were males and 20,653 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 8,819 out of which 5,460 were males and 3,359 were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 58.44% and 40.78% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi and Urdu with 80.10% and 19.70%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the Amroha district. Majority of the population of the district earns their livelihood from agriculture. Some of its chief agricultural products are mangoes, guavas, wheat, maize, potatoes, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these agricultural products helps in its economy to a great extent. Besides agriculture there are also several cottage industries like manufacturing of traditional musical instruments like dholak and katholi, handloom works, cloth weaving, etc which are very popular across the country. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 21,90,046 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 14,44,903 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 19,56,903 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 12,58,077 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 90,347 at Current Price and Rs. 58,084 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district provides a platform for higher education. Some of its reputed educational institutions are H.D. Degree College, J.S. Hindu Post Graduate College, Hashmi Girl’s Degree College, B.I. Qureshi Degree College, Bhagirathi Degree College, Nayab Abbasi Girl’s Degree College, Y.M.S. Degree College, Government Rama Bai Ambedkar Degree College, M. Hussain Degree College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 63.84% including 74.54% are males and 52.1% are females.
Harish Nagpal, an illustrious Indian politician and Member of Parliament in 2004 from the Amroha constituency was born on 3rd August, 1964 at Jyotiba Phule Nagar district. He contested the 2004 Indian general election as an independent candidate.
During the year 2021, there were 56,014 domestic tourists and 2 foreign tourists who visited these places of the district. Every year numerous travellers from different parts of the country come to the place to enjoy its centres of attraction. Tourism in the district flourishes day by day since it offers several places of historical and religious importance to its visitors. Saiyad Mohammed Ashraf Shah Wilayat Dargah in Danishmand, Amroha is the most well known tourist spot which was named after revered sufi saint Shah Wilayat. Imambargah, also located in Danishmand is a pious place which was built by Musamat Wazir-unNisa in the memory of her daughter. Vasudev temple and tulsi garden in the district was built sometimes around 500 BC. Moreover, it was earlier popularly known as Baba Batukeshwar Dham. Fort wall and gates of the ancient period present in the district narrates its glorious past. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Bayen ka kuan, Naseeruddin Sahib ki Mazar, Dargah Bhure Shah, etc.
